Complete “Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills” or “IOLS”. Classes cover the basics of planning, cooking, equipment, campfire planning, health and safety. This is an in-person overnight camping course held by the Golden Empire Council. The Troop Training Coordinator (a committee member) will let the leadership know when these classes become available.
Complete Wilderness First Aid (optional, but encouraged)
All four of Scouting America high-adventure bases (HAB) require at least one person per trek (two per trek at Philmont Scout Ranch) to be current in Wilderness First Aid through one of Scouting America’s approved providers. Of course, having more participants trained in WFA skills is highly recommended for any high adventure or backcountry experience.
